Epic 4, Story 13, Task 4: Assess System Impacts

Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Priority: HIGH
Last updated: 2025-12-18 (v0.4.13.4+1 – T04 COMPLETE: RW doc-init detection bug identified and fixed, system impacts assessed)
Started: 2025-12-18
Completed: 2025-12-18
Version: v0.4.13.4+1
Code: E4S13T04

Task ID

Format: E\{epic\}:S\{story\}:T\{task\} (e.g., E4:S13:T04)

Full Task ID: E4:S13:T04

Scope

Assess if the Kanban board enhancement (MoSCOW prioritized task view) affects any other systems that interact with Kanban. Document the impacts so that those systems can be summarily updated.

NEW USE CASE DISCOVERED: A bug has been identified in the Release Workflow's doc-init detection logic:

Scenario:

  1. Story + all task docs created together in story's abstract space (v0.E.S.0+0)
  2. When first task implementation work is done, RW runs
  3. RW correctly bumps BUILD number
  4. BUG: RW incorrectly bumps BUILD to 0 instead of 1

Root Cause: The detect_first_time_est_doc function in validate_version_bump.py had flawed logic:

  • When task doc already exists (not created in THIS commit) AND no prior S.T+* version exists
  • Function incorrectly returned is_first_time = True (line 696)
  • This caused RW to set BUILD=0 instead of BUILD=1

Fix Applied:FIXED - Updated detect_first_time_est_doc function in validate_version_bump.py:

  • Added check: If task document already exists (using locate_task_doc function) → NOT doc-init
  • If task doc exists but wasn't created in this commit → is_first_time = False → BUILD=1
  • Only returns is_first_time = True if task doc is created in THIS commit AND docs-only AND no prior version
  • Fix handles the case where story + task docs created together in story's abstract space

Assessment Required:

  • Identify all systems that interact with Kanban
  • Analyze impact for each system
  • Document required updates for each affected system
  • NEW: Document the RW doc-init detection bug and fix

Dependencies:

  • Depends on T01 completion (enhanced board structure must be implemented to assess impacts)

Input

Prerequisites:

  • T01 completed (enhanced Kanban board structure implemented)

  • Understanding of systems that interact with Kanban:

    • Release Workflow scripts and configuration
    • Validator scripts
    • Installer scripts
    • Other automated systems
  • NEW: Understanding of RW doc-init detection bug scenario

      • Kanban structure validator (if exists)
      • Do validators parse Kanban board structure?
      • Required updates documented

      • Impact analysis for each
      • Required updates documented
  3. RW Doc-Init Detection Bug Analysis:

    • Bug Description:

      • Scenario: Story + all task docs created together in story's abstract space (v0.E.S.0+0)
      • When first task implementation work is done, RW incorrectly sets BUILD=0 instead of BUILD=1
      • Root cause: detect_first_time_est_doc function flawed logic
    • Root Cause:

      • Function checks if task doc created in THIS commit
      • Function checks if prior version exists
      • If task doc NOT created in this commit AND no prior version → incorrectly returns is_first_time = True
      • Should check if task doc already exists (even if not created in this commit)
    • Fix Required:

      • Update detect_first_time_est_doc function in validate_version_bump.py
      • Add check: If task document already exists (file exists or section exists in Story file) → NOT doc-init
      • Only return is_first_time = True if:
        1. Task doc created in THIS commit (git diff shows new file/section)
        2. No prior version exists
        3. Docs-only changes
      • If task doc exists AND code changes present → BUILD=1 (not 0)
    • Files Updated:

      • packages/frameworks/workflow mgt/scripts/validation/validate_version_bump.py
        • Function: detect_first_time_est_doc (lines 548-702)
        • Fixed logic: Added task document existence check before determining doc-init
        • Fix prevents BUILD=0 when task doc exists but wasn't created in this commit
      • packages/frameworks/workflow mgt/KB/Documentation/Developer_Docs/vwmp/release-workflow-agent-execution.md
        • Updated doc-init detection logic documentation (A.1 section)
        • Added Example 4: Normal Build (Story + Task Docs Created Together - Bug Fix)
        • Documented the fix and new use case scenario
  4. Impact Analysis Format:
