E6:S07:T104 – Release Automation Audit

Task ID: E6:S07:T104 Status: COMPLETE Priority: HIGH Estimated Effort: Medium Created: 2026-03-07 Last updated: 2026-03-10 (Release Automation Audit COMPLETE - Critical fixes implemented, release automation restored)

Audit Status: ✅ COMPLETE Implementation Status: ✅ CRITICAL FIXES COMPLETE Risk Level: LOW (minor cosmetic issues remain) Release Automation: ✅ RESTORED

Scope

Audit and analyze all release automation components to ensure they work correctly with the new task-touch SemVer tagging (FR-046) and identify any gaps or issues that need to be addressed.

Inputs

  • FR-045: ADR-002 Task-Touch Derived Mapping implementation
  • FR-046: RW Uses SemVer Tag When Task-Touch Enabled implementation
  • Current release automation: GitHub Actions, validators, badge workflow, GitHub Release script
  • Release policies and procedures documentation
  • Required secrets and configuration

Deliverable

Comprehensive audit report covering:

Release Automation Components

  • RW/PVW Validators: Ensure they work with new tagging strategies
  • GitHub Actions: Verify CI/CD pipelines work with SemVer tags
  • Badge Workflow: Check version badge generation/updating
  • GitHub Release Script: Validate with auto-detection mode
  • Required Secrets: Audit access tokens and permissions

Integration Points

  • Tag Strategy Compatibility: Registry vs task-touch mode handling
  • Package Publishing: Ensure SemVer tags work with package registries
  • Documentation Generation: Verify changelog and readme updates
  • Notification Systems: Check release notifications and alerts

Security & Compliance

  • Secret Management: Audit required secrets and access controls
  • Permission Validation: Ensure proper GitHub permissions
  • Security Scans: Verify security scanning works with new tags
  • Compliance Checks: Validate release compliance requirements

Acceptance Criteria

  • Complete audit of all release automation components
  • Identify compatibility issues with task-touch tagging
  • Document required fixes and improvements
  • Verify security and compliance requirements
  • Create remediation plan for identified issues
  • Test critical release workflows end-to-end

Implementation Results

✅ Critical Issues Resolved

  • Release Workflow Tag Creation: Fixed dual tag strategy support
  • Git Tag Handler: Implemented with task-touch SemVer support
  • Badge Workflow: Updated with SemVer conversion logic
  • Strategy Detection: Auto-detection from rw-config.yaml

✅ Security & Compliance

  • Secret Management: Audited and validated
  • Permission Requirements: Confirmed appropriate access
  • Security Scanning: Compatible with new tagging
  • Compliance Requirements: All met

🟡 Minor Issues Remaining

  • Badge Parameters: Some uppercase parameter formatting (cosmetic only)
  • Documentation: Need task-touch mode documentation

📊 Risk Assessment

  • Pre-Implementation: HIGH (release blocking issues)
  • Post-Implementation: LOW (minor cosmetic issues)

Dependencies

  • FR-045 implementation (task-touch SemVer mapping)
  • FR-046 implementation (RW SemVer tagging)
  • Access to GitHub Actions and repository settings

  • E6:S07:T103: RW Maintenance (perpetual task)
  • FR-046: RW Uses SemVer Tag When Task-Touch Enabled
  • Release automation documentation and policies

Notes

This audit is critical now that we've implemented task-touch SemVer tagging, as it fundamentally changes how releases are tagged and processed by automation systems.

The audit should focus on:

  1. Backward Compatibility: Ensure existing automation still works
  2. New Feature Support: Validate task-touch mode automation
  3. Security: Ensure no security gaps with new tagging
  4. Performance: Verify no performance regressions

Priority is HIGH because release automation issues could block releases and impact project delivery.
