Overview
This story creates a comprehensive Post-Implementation Review (PIR) workflow for the Workflow Management Framework. The PIR workflow enables systematic review of completed Epics and Stories, capturing lessons learned, identifying improvements, and ensuring quality standards are met.
The PIR workflow will:
- Support both Epic-level and Story-level reviews
- Follow the agent-driven execution pattern established by RW
- Integrate seamlessly with Kanban, versioning, and knowledge base systems
- Provide structured templates and checklists for consistent reviews
- Enable knowledge capture and continuous improvement
Goal
Create a complete, reusable Post-Implementation Review workflow that can be triggered for completed Epics and Stories, following the same agent-driven execution pattern as the Release Workflow (RW).

Deliverable: RW integration for PIR auto-trigger
Dependencies: E2:S05:T04
Blocker: None
Status: TODO
Problem Statement: PIR workflow must be auto-triggered when Epic/Story is marked COMPLETE. This requires a deterministic check in RW to detect COMPLETE status and trigger PIR workflow.
Approach:
-
Add RW Step for PIR Trigger:
- Add new step to RW workflow (Step 15 or appropriate step after Step 14)
- Step name: "Check for PIR Trigger" or "Post-Release PIR Check"
- Deterministic check: Read Epic/Story status from Kanban documents
- If status is COMPLETE, trigger PIR workflow
-
Design Deterministic Check:
- Read Epic/Story document status field
- Check if status equals "COMPLETE" or "COMPLETE ✅"
- For Epic: Always trigger PIR
- For Story: Evaluate significance criteria before triggering
-
Implement PIR Trigger Logic:
- Create trigger script or function
- Support both Epic and Story level triggers
- Handle Story significance evaluation
- Pass context (Epic/Story ID, version) to PIR workflow
-
Update RW Workflow YAML:
- Add new step to
release-workflow.yaml - Configure step dependencies (after Step 14)
- Add configuration options for PIR trigger
- Document step in RW reference
- Add new step to
-
Update RW Documentation:
- Update
release-workflow-reference.mdwith new step (Step 15) - Document new step in
release-workflow-agent-execution.md - Provide step-by-step execution instructions
- Include examples for Epic and Story triggers
- Document error handling and edge cases
- Update step count (14 → 15 steps)
- Update workflow version history (1.4.0 → 1.5.0)
- Update
-
Test RW-PIR Integration:
- Test Epic COMPLETE trigger
- Test Story COMPLETE trigger (significant)
- Test Story COMPLETE skip (not significant)
- Test error handling
Deliverables:
- Updated
workflows/release-workflow.yamlwith PIR trigger step (Step 15) - Updated
docs/documentation/Developer_Docs/vwmp/release-workflow-agent-execution.mdwith Step 15 documentation - Updated
docs/documentation/Developer_Docs/vwmp/release-workflow-reference.mdwith Step 15 reference - PIR trigger script/function (deterministic check implementation)
- RW-PIR integration test results
- Updated RW workflow version (1.4.0 → 1.5.0)
Key Requirements:
- Deterministic: Check must be reliable and repeatable
- Auto-trigger: No manual intervention required
- Epic always: All completed Epics trigger PIR
- Story selective: Only significant Stories trigger PIR
- Non-blocking: RW should complete even if PIR trigger fails (with warning)
Integration Points:
- RW Step 15: Check for PIR Trigger (after Step 14)
- Kanban document reading (status field)
- PIR workflow invocation
- Error handling and logging
RW Workflow Changes:
- New Step: Step 15 - Check for PIR Trigger
- Step Count: 14 → 15 steps
- Version: 1.4.0 → 1.5.0
- Dependencies: Step 15 depends on Step 14 (Push to Remote)
- Non-blocking: RW completes even if PIR trigger fails (logs warning)
